Description

This is a Hubble-Palette SHO image, but I have added RGB stars following the same procedure, passing through the CIE L*a*b colour-space, that I used for the first time on my image of Melotte 15. It's hardly visible in this image becasue most of the stars are white.

This object (also called W3 in the 1956 Westerhout catalog of radio sources) is just to the north-west of the Heart nebula (also called W4). The dark dust streak separating the object gives it the appearance of a fish, with the part to the west (right in this image) being the head, NGC 896, while the eastern part is the body and catalogued as IC 1795. For this reason NGC 896 is sometimes called the Fish-Head Nebula.

Close to the brightest star in the fish-head is an area only visible in the infra-red where a group of massive stars are still in the process of formation, accumulating gas from the cloud they have formed in.

The brighter NGC 891 was discovered by William Herschel in 1796.
