Description

It is almost a tradition now to take a shot at M57 in early Spring. It kind of comes naturally, since I always have a few hours left in the morning in galaxy season, and the Milky Way is not quite up at that time, and the most interesting target is then M57 (my observation window is limited).

So this year I wanted to see how much one can get out with LRGB exposures under Bortle 6 skies, with a little Hα as help.

Well ... I am actually very surprised how far I came, certainly not an image that can compete with a C11 or bigger with a high focal length. One day I will tackle it with this kind of scope. In the meantime I love my refractor, even if this is close to its limit.

This image had 2 goals: make the outer halo of M57 at least visible (which one can see in the cropped version), and star handling. This was not an easy task to get all the stars showing up without creating too many bloated stars and without overdoing the target! Many trials are behind this image, this is so far the best I could come up with.

Special notice to version J, this is the extracted red channel and it shows some interesting structures inside the ring. In the overall image this is covered by the green and blue channel, thought that it was interesting to see.

Description: The wide field version. Here the star handling was more in the center of processing, I believe this is the 4th or 5th trial version that I produced, lost count.

Description: Red channel only. I found it more than interesting to see the details inside the ring!

Title: 2x Powermate LRGB additions

Description: This was another test with the 2x Powermate, knowing that the famous Ring Nebula needs some serious magnification. And even at 1850 mm it is still pretty darn small!
I combined the new data with the old ones that I obtained over the years, I definitely missed out to add some Hα data with the Powermate, should have tried it although my fear is that the f/14 setup would make it extremely hard to get some data.
Overall I like the final result, many more stars to see and even the red surroundings popped up quite a bit! Not that I fell from my chair when I saw the final result 😊😊.
