Description

Here is my image of the Flame and Horsehead Nebulae which are close to the Orion Nebula. The Flame Nebula on the left, also known as NGC 2024, is an emission nebula whose glow results from electrons recombining with ionized hydrogen. Dust lanes in the Flame Nebula obscure a cluster of newly formed stars. The nebula's hydrogen is ionized by the adjacent star Alnitak, a hot blue supergiant which is the easternmost star in Orion's belt. To the right of Alnitak is the famous Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33. The Horsehead is fairly difficult to image because it is just dust backlighted by a dim H II region. The bright blotch to the lower left of the Horsehead is a beautiful reflection nebula cataloged as NGC 2023.

This image is a stack of 26 80-second ISO 6400 exposures at 1645mm FL, calibrated with 20 flat frames, 10 dark frames, and 10 bias frames, and then post-processed in Photoshop.
