Description

This object, also known as NGC 2633, is a grand design spiral galaxy located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Camelopardis at a declination of +74 degrees. This galaxy spans 1.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years. The galaxy appears to us about halfway between face-on and edge-on.

I love the structure of this galaxy. The bright core is surrounded by a yellow inner region, which has bright areas at the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. An interesting dust band weaves around the core. The 2 strong arms are symmetric at first, but the upper arm terminates in a series of blue star clusters.

This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Large, High Surface Brightness Spiral Galaxies with Companions on Arms. I have no idea why he categorized it as such. I do not see any companions on the arm of this galaxy.
