The constellation Eridanus hosts many nebulae, and LBN 917 is one. It lies west of the Great Nebula in Orion, and is considerably fainter. LBN 917 has not been much studied and, consequently, little is written about it. Apparently, it is a bit of a hybread HII (red) and reflection nebula (blue), as well as passive areas (brown or gray). In fact this deep-sky object is seldom imaged, even by amateurs. However, it commonly occurs in stock-photo collections and even on a tote bag, where it is commonly mislabeled as the “question mark nebula” or the “Wolf nebula.” I have not found a widely accepted name for this cloud. I think I’ll call it “The Incognito Nebula”.
