Description

Located in Eridanus, 55 million light-years distant, NGC1532 and NGC1531 are tangled together with tidal tails and other collision effects (warped disk, bridging).    A large string of star burst activity is clearly evident in one of the arms.

In the smaller NGC 1531, there's a hint of spiral structure, with a possible bar.   Two other smaller galaxies in the field are likely members of the group.    From Gemini observations of the pair, the mass of NGC1532 is thought to be slightly greater than the Milky Way.

At the CAC site in southern AZ where this image was captured, this object only reaches a maximum altitude angle of 25 degrees above the horizon.   A bit tough for us northern observers, but well worth the chase!
