Description

This is a preliminary study using my smaller 200mm DSO setup. Most of the data was collected as a by-product of trying to sort out tracking problems with the mount (still not well, alas).  I'll come back to this target with my bigger scope because I can get better details in the galaxies and add Ha data. Nonetheless it turned out much better than I was expecting.

The two brightest galaxies NGC 3347 (magnitude +11.2) and NGC 3358 (magnitude +11.3) are located in the southern constellation of Antlia. NGC 3347 is a barred spiral galaxy, while NGC 3358 is an irregular galaxy.

NGC 3347 and smaller NGC 3354 (magnitude +13.2) are in the process of merging with each other, which has resulted in tidal distortion of their shapes. This can be seen in the elongation of the spiral arms of NGC 3347 and the faint tidal tails extending between the galaxies.
