Description

Located in the star forming molecular cloud Monoceros R2 in the Monoceros constellation, NGC2170 is a dusty reflection nebula and stellar nursery. It formed about six to 10 million years ago.

The areas that appear bluish are reflection nebulae as they reflect the light of nearby hot stars. The red areas are emission nebulae and they shine because UV light from stars nearby excites hydrogen and other gas atoms in the nebula, and it emits light in specific colors.

The black region are dark absorption nebulae are seen because of the light they block.
