Description

Abell 3 is a Planetary Nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is of medium brightness among the PNs at magnitude 16. Both Ha and Oiii are strongly represented, with close to identical intensities. It is very small with a diameter of 1 arcminute, but is not perfectly round, showing some blockiness, with an unusual banded appearance.

The Ha and Oiii are concentrated at different regions within the circle, so differences can be observed.

This PN is rarely imaged. I found no color images on the web, other than the several already posted on Astrobin. And basically zero info on this PN. Distance is about 8400 ly with a true diameter of 3 ly.

With a dec of 64 degrees at my obs in NM I was able to image this in a single night. Not the norm for these PNs for me.

This image contains a rather striking very large orange-red carbon star.
