Description

This is a large emission (red light) and reflection (blue light) nebula in the constellation Auriga. It is about 1,500 lightyears away, making it about 5 lightyears in diameter. The red light is from hydrogen gas that is energized by the central star, AE Aurigae, as well as other hot, young stars in the area.

To create this image, I combined wideband color data taken with my ZWO color astro camera with narrowband hydrogen-alpha data (the red signal) from my ZWO monochrome astro camera, which has much better contrast and detail since it can pierce through the light pollution.

I think this is the first image I've done over multiple seasons -- I started taking data on it last winter!
