Description

The NGC 7771 galaxy group also includes NGC 7770, NGC 7771A and NGC 7769 located about 200 million light years away in Pegasus. NGC 7771 is about 75,000 light years across. The bluish edge-on galaxy just below NGC 7771 is PGC 214993 and known as NGC 7771A. The small edge-on (unrelated) spiral to the right of the group is MGC+03-60-031. Galaxies in this group are interacting, making repeated close passages that will ultimately result in mergers.  NGC 7771 shows a tidal feature strongly inclined to its disk and aligned with the compact companion NGC 7770 which may be stars stripped from the smaller galaxy (see also “The NGC 7771 + NGC 7770 Minor Merger:  Harassing The Little One?” by Alonso-Herrero, et al, 15 Jan 2021).  Extensive clouds of foreground dust lie a few hundred light years above the galactic plane and make a clear view of the galaxy group a bit more difficult.     (APOD: 21 Jan 2010)

Imaged over several nights:  Aug 9, 11; Sep 2-3, 5, 7, 12 and 27, 2021.
