Description

Following on from our recent joint imaging project of the full moon, my son had been playing with SkySafari and was very excited to see that Jupiter's GRS would be in view the evening of 10th July. He set an alarm and everything!

So it was a little heart-breaking that it ended up being yet another cloudy evening ... but that's the reality of astronomy for you. I did prepare him for that possibility, but still ... disappointing for him.

As it happened though, the clouds cleared around 11pm (well after he'd gone to bed). So I did manage to capture some data for us to play with, albeit with the GRS just about to disappear from view. Oval BA is showing its stuff, though, and looking mighty impressive these days!

Seeing was good overall, although strangely I felt like I couldn't quite achieve focus. I did have moments of severe "jelly wobble", so perhaps there were some fast seeing effects being averaged out by the preview frame rate.

Anyway, it all came good in the end! If you look closely, you can see some flecks of orange cloud in the turbulent wake of the GRS.

This image is a de-rotation of 5 individual images, which were created by stacking the top 15% of frames from 2 minute captures.

Thanks for looking!
