Description

The California nebula, NGC1499, is a 100ly band of excited hydrogen gas in the constellation Perseus.     The nubula is approximately 1000 ly from us here on Earth.   Excitation comes from Xi Persei, also known as Menkib.   I shot this in one of the few clear nights we've had over the last 2 months here in Vermont.  I have a good amount of Ha data, but very little OIII and this shows in the image.   I have been waiting for clear nights that don't go to -10F but it doesn't look like it's going to happen before California gets to far west for me to image well.   So this is all I have until next year.
