Description

This is my image of another amazing nebula 6500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia called the Soul Nebula (catalog IC  1848 ). It is next to the Heart Nebula and together they form the "Heart and Soul" nebulae. This nebula hosts a huge source of radio emission cataloged as Westerhouse 5. Infrared images reveal high levels of star formation on the edges of this nebula where the gasses concentrate in a boundary wave pushed by radiation from the central star clusters. The young central stars trigger the formation of even younger stars in these boundary areas in a process called triggered star formation. The bright portion on the right side of this image has gained the name The Great Rift and is cataloged as IC 1871. The image presented here is only a portion of the entire Soul Nebula, which continues below and right. We also get a little bonus nebula on the left side of this image.

When we look up at the night sky it's easy to get a sense that it is static. The constellations for the most part are the same shapes and positions that our earliest ancestors observed. It is a bond that we share with past generations. But the fact is that the universe is constantly changing as evidenced by the new star formation and evolving nebulae that we can observe through telescopes.

I made this image from the best of 33 300-second exposures through my Baader dual-bandpass filter (Hα and OIII) at 1630mm focal length (0.7X reducer), calibrated with 20 each dark, flat, and dark flat frames. I stacked the frames with Astro Pixel Processor and post-processed with Photoshop utilizing the StarXTerminator, Astronomy Tools, and Topaz DeNoise AI plugins.
