Description

This object is a rarely imaged open star cluster located 1400 light years away in the southern constellation of Vela at a declination of -49 degrees. This 5th magnitude cluster of 100 stars spans 25 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 10 light years.

The cluster was discovered by the Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1755. He described it as “five faint stars like the letter T in nebulosity.”

This is a great object but not a great image, due to the -49 degree declination. It is tough to get a good image when your scope is almost horizontal.
