Description

M80 is a ball of about half a million stars about 32,600 light years away towards Scorpio. These stars are packed into a region of about 95 light years in diameter, making it one of the denser globular clusters known. By comparison, a similar size region around our sun would contain about 86 star systems. Just like people, when you pack this many stars into a small place, there are consequences! This particular cluster also has a very high proportion of blue stragglers, stars that are born out of the collision of two other stars, and these can be seen dotted through the cluster.
