Description

The California Nebula is an emission nebula, about 100 light years in length, located about 1500 light years from Earth in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. The star most likely providing the energetic starlight that ionizes much of the nebular gas is the bright, hot, bluish Xi Persei, seen in the photo, just below the nubula.

This is a two panel mosaic taken with a wide field side-by-side rig that I've been building.

The scopes are a Sky Watcher Esprit 80/400 and a Takahashi FX60CB at 375 mm with the 1.04x field flattener. As the Tak is slower (F6.2 vs the Esprit F5) I put a Ha filter in its optical train while the Esprit did SII and OIII using a 5x EFW. Test shots showed that there was good detail in the SII but almost none in the OIII, so OIII was binned 2x2 and fewer subs were taken.
