Description

This small Astrobin Debut Object, also known as UGC 5720, is a dwarf galaxy located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +54 degrees. This magnitude 13.4 galaxy spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 25,000 light years. It was classified by Dr. Arp into the odd category of Galaxies – Appearance of Fission.

I find the subtle color of this galaxy to be interesting – primarily blue with faint hints of purple, suggesting star formation is still occurring. I was careful in processing this object to maintain the unique galaxy structure. The shape of the inner region, around the core, is almost triangular. I don’t understand this structure. It appears to be disturbed like a polar ring galaxy but I do not see any galaxies close enough to cause this disturbance. The galaxies seen in the background are all too distant, with the 2 largest being well over 0.5 billion light years away.
