Description

The constellation of Scorpius hides a little treasure at the level of its tail. Its very weak hydrogen emission gas contours and its very dark center make the Black Tower a great challenge for the astrophotographer. This nebula encompasses the open star cluster NGC 6231. This dark tower nebula, NGC 6231, and associated nebulae are about 5,000 light-years away.
