Description

This beautiful giant interstellar cloud located in the Sagittarius arm is an H II region which is 100 light years accross and approximately 4100 light years away. Associated with the open cluster NGC6530, M8 forms a complex structure comprising many large and hot stars whose UV radiaton shape the gas and dust of the nebula in an unusual way. NGC6530 has been formed from the material of M8 in which active star formation takes place. Many Bok globules (dense and dark clouds of dust) in which new stars are born can be detected inside the nebula. The blue color in the center of the nebula is an indicator of ionising radiation of the hot stars heating up the dust clouds.

Processing Details:

Red Channel: Red+Ha+SII

Green Channel: Green + Synthetic Green [iif(OIII > 0.5, 1 - (1 - Ha) * (1 - (OIII - 0.5)), Ha * (OIII + 0.5))]

Blue Channel: Blue + OIII

RGB obtained by combining Red Channel, Green Channel and Blue Channel in PixelMath.

Star colors are calibrated by PhotometricColorCalibration.
