Description

This pair of magnitude 13 spiral galaxies is located in the constellation of Leo Minor at a declination of +28 degrees.   Distance measurements are a bit uncertain – both appear to be in the neighborhood of 70 million light years away but, based on their relatively undisturbed structures, I do not think that they are interacting with each other.

NGC 3504, at lower right, spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.  I love the galaxy structure – a bright white core connected by a faint yellow bar to an inner ring which has bright blue star cloud ansae.  The highlight is the pseudo-ring in the outer disk.

NGC 3512, at upper left, is smaller at a diameter of 30,000 light years.  This galaxy has an odd arm structure and an asymmetric disk.
