Description

This is galaxy M74, located 32 million lightyears behind the constellation Pisces. It's quite dim, and it was a bit of a struggle to pull it away from the background noise! Home to about 100 billion stars, it's 95,000 lightyears across, just a little smaller than our own galaxy. It's face-on from our perspective and has a fairly large angular size for a galaxy, which has made it a good target for studying spiral arm structure.

Typically, you don't want to totally kill your background in astronomical images -- it looks more natural to have some background light, and there are usually faint structures buried there, whether that's other galaxies, streamers from the galaxy being imaged, etc. However, there was a really large amount of noise that had a weirdly large structure, and it was hard to reduce because of how close to the noise the galaxy was. So it's a darker background than I would normally like. However, I'm quite happy with the color I got in the galaxy!
