Description

This is an accidental 3 panel mosaic. I started shooting the centre panel and noticed that the camera was 90 degrees away from the ideal framing. Instead of going outside and turning the camera, I thought I would just add a panel above and below the centre. Wouldn't it just be like processing 3 shots?

No, it was much harder than that, and really stretched my processing abilities. I overdid it a bit on the sharpening / blurring transitions. I also still struggle with the medium-bright nebulosity - it always seems to turn out grainy.

I learned some absolutely wonderful Pixinsight scripts dealing specifically with mosaics. MosaicByCoordinates, dnaLinearFit, and GradientMergeMosaic. They made the job a lot easier, but it was still a huge task. Because I drizzled all frames, uncropped mosaics turned out to be 10,233 x 18,614 pixels. Also, I did not notice at first that GradientMergeMosaic saves your image as a 64 bit image. Individual mosaic files were each 4.5GB !

This is my 3rd iteration. It still has flaws if you get too close, but it is good enough I think ! ; )
