Description

Messier 104, the Sombrero Galaxy, is one of the more distinctive galaxies in the night sky. That large central bulge, the prominent dust lane that surrounds it and it's nearly edge on orientation to us give it a very dramatic appearance.

I wasn't expecting too much from this image -- that large central bulge seemed very much like an elliptical galaxy's featureless blobiness even though M104 is a spiral galaxy. However when I saw the data come in I was very pleasantly surprised. There is detail in the dust lane and hints of structure in what little we can see of the disk. It's all on the more subtle side but worth spending time examining!
