Description

This photo was taken with the Celestron Edge HD 9.25 telescope using two types of correctors. Part of the IFN is made with the Starizona Hyperstar v4 while the galaxies are made with the 0.7x Celestron reducer. The images were blended in PS.

The two galaxies shown in this photo appear enveloped in a nebula of intergalactic dust. The name Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN) was given by Steve Mandel. This nebula is an extremely faint glow caused by the light of the Milky Way reflected by interstellar gas and dust. It is best seen in photos far from the star plane of the Milky Way.
IFN is so elusive that it was only identified in the early 1990s. We see very large parts of the IFN in the northern regions, near Polaris and other circumpolar constellations.
