Description

This object, also known as G54.2-3.4, is a tiny planetary nebula located 15,000 light years away in the constellation of Sagitta at a declination of +17 degrees. This PN spans 25 arc-seconds, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 2 light years. The ring is tilted to our line of sight at an angle of about 60 degrees from face-on.

This PN is unusual because of the bright white stellar-like knots of gas (i.e., the “necklace”) around the rim of the nebula. The nebula is primarily OIII signal, with a minor amount of Ha. The small central star, reddish in color, is barely visible. Scientists believe that this progenitor star is a binary star with an orbital period of about a day.
