Description

NGC7814 is the "small sombrero" galaxy at a distance of about 40 million light years. Currently it is hosting supernova 2021rhu: The bright spot just "below" the galaxy center.  While its apparent magnitude mid-July was 12, in mid-August it has declined to mag 14. Still, this means it is currently still about as luminous as 125 million suns. It is a type Ia supernova, thought to occur in binary systems with one or two white dawrds, when a white dwarf acretes enough matter to reignite fusion. As their spectral content is closely related to their absolute brightness, they are very useful to judge distances to galaxies. I have found no such calculation yet for 2021rhu, though.

Due to mount connection problems and abysmal weather I only got 10 minutes of L frames and one of 5 min each of R, G, B. Considering the short integration time at f/8 I really like the image and I am very happy to have captured my first supernova.
