Description

This object is a tiny cometary nebula located 2000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +50 degrees. A cometary nebula is a fan-shaped reflection nebula whose source star lies at the vertex of the fan. The most well known example of a cometary nebula is Hubble's Variable Nebula.

The nebula surrounds the young stellar object V1982 Cyg and is about 1 light year wide. V1982 Cyg is the bright white star at the upper right of the nebula. I believe that the orange star (HBC 727) at the lower left edge of the nebula is only a line of sight coincidence and is not connected to the nebula.

Several bright white arcs focused back on V1982 Cyg are seen in the nebula, which I find to be interesting. The dark nebula on the right side of the image is LDN 988.
