Description

This was the first and only OSC deep sky image I have taken. I took it in the summer of 2019 when I was just getting back into deep sky photography. I had not acquired a cooled camera yet and was using an old modified 600d. It was 25 degrees Celsius on the two nights I imaged. At that time of year, being 50 degrees north, I also never get astronomical darkness. I had everything against me except clouds. The data was so bad I was unable to process anything at the time. With bad weather for weeks recently, and new processing techniques, I tried to salvage what I could. The back ground is still blotchy, but I can live with it. I have attached a single raw sub frame so you can see how bad the data set was!

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus. It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant, many portions of which have acquired their own individual names and catalogue identifiers. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. At the time of explosion, the supernova would have appeared brighter than Venus in the sky, and visible in daytime. The remnants have since expanded to cover an area of the sky roughly 3 degrees in diameter. While previous distance estimates have ranged from 1200 to 5800 light-years, a recent determination of 2400 light-years is based on direct astrometric measurements.

NGC 6960 - The Witch's Broom Nebula Also known as Western Veil, The Finger of God, The Lacework Nebula, The Filamentary Nebula, and Caldwell 34. The bright star in the image is 52 Cygni. The colours are from emission of Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sodium gas.

Thank for looking!
