Description

Messier 76, the Little Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Perseus that has been called the faintest of the Messier objects by visual observers.   The nebulosity spans about 2.7’ by 1.8’, making this object a good target for longer focal length telescopes.

This image was captured with the Celestron C11 EdgeHD and the 0.7x reducer at an overall focal length of about 2000 mm. It is a combination of HOO narrowband and broadband RGB.  Star colors are RGB, and the color in the nebula is a blend of HOO and RGB.  I started with the Orion 7 nm Extra Narrowband filter, but received a new Chroma 3 nm Oiii filter part way through the project, so the Oiii data are a blend from the two filters.

I was hoping to capture the magnitude 16.6 central star, but the narrowband filters are rather brutal in suppressing fainter stars.  There may be a trace of the central star visible, but I did not want to over-sharpen the image in an attempt to pull it out.  Capturing some of the faint, outer H-alpha nebulosity was a goal for this project, and I am pleased with how it turned out.
