Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +45 degrees. This magnitude 12.9 galaxy spans 5.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 65,000 light years. The galaxy is inclined 40 degrees from edge-on.

The galaxy looks shrouded in some dust, as the details are not clear to me despite the fact that the stars look OK. The arms look somewhat fragmented, although many pink HII regions and bright blue star clusters are visible. The bright stellar core is indicative that this was one of the original six Seyfert galaxies listed in the 1943 discovery paper by Dr. Seyfert.
