Description

I checked the weather by going outside. Clear skies. Even the weather forecast showed clear skies.

There was one thing I wanted to do and that was to check the quality of the images by defocussing the camera and looking at the “donuts” all around the field of view.

The “donuts” looked good all over..

I was checking this out by pointing at a large, open star cluster, NGC188, near the North Pole. It was looking so good that I thought I would go ahead and take a set of images. I checked the camera temperature and to my surprise it was at -15C. Perfect! So I set up for a run of 50 images at 60 seconds each. At the end, I went out to close up, and that’s when I found dew all over everything, including the lens of the telescope! (At least the computer was covered with a plastic sheet.) I should have known. There is always a heavy amount of moisture in the air for up to two nights after a rain. Dew on the telescope lens is like putting a cloud between the telescope and the stars.

Out of 50 images, the first 9 are acceptable. This is one of them.

The only processing done was to stretch and debayer with ASTAP.
