In this entire image, the only object with a common designation is the small black dot and its surrounding blue reflection nebula at the left-center of this image—NGC 1999. That black dot received considerable attention in about 2009, suspecting that it owed its existence to some yet unknown phenomenon, only to discover it was merely a hole in the prevailing nebulae: a window through the nebulae to the universe beyond. The young star illuminating the blue nebula lies at the hole's edge and is not visible in my image, but its local area is generally brighter white than the surroundings. A Hubble image of the region shows the star clearly. This star, and probably others concealed in the nebula, likely purged the gas from the hole. However, the other cases of this action that I have seen always left the stars behind in the hole. Maybe there’s some other action that carved the whole? Probably not a first-magnitude question that would keep professional astronomers awake at night!

Such an extensive nebular complex may immediately bright to mind the Orion region, and indeed, that is where this image focuses.
