Description

Here we have the globular cluster Messier 9 in Ophiuchus. This is a Shapley-Sawyer class VIII cluster, which is described as "rather loosely concentrated towards the center" and contains more than 250,000 stars.

It is located rather close to the galactic center at about 25,800 ly away and is quite near Barnard 64 a dark nebula. The cluster is somewhat obscured by dust and also is rather red-shifted as it is moving away from us at 224 km/s which is a rather high rate of speed. I think both factors contribute to the reddish bias of the image.

There are not many examples of this one on AB but there are a couple by Geof Lewis and Bob J that are quite nice but at a much different image scale. My objective was to feature Barnard 64 as much as the gobular. I think I had some success in that area. Of course, more integration time always helps but we are now beginning the Arizona monsoon season and the opportunities are a bit less frequent... But I did manage tp image this for an entire evening and was able to collect well over 500 frames and at f/2.3 I don't think that was too bad.

Anyway, I hope you like it and comments/criticism always welcome.
