Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a galaxy chain located 0.7 billion light years away in the constellation of Aquarius at a declination of +2 degrees.  At a field radius of 0.075 degrees, this is one of the smallest fields of view that I have posted.

The largest galaxy at center is known as both IC 1370 and LEDA 66418.  This galaxy spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 150,000 light years.

IC 1370 is also sometimes used to designate the galaxy chain.  But is it really a chain?  The only other distance information available is for the right hand galaxy of the chain, which is at 1.3 billion light years away and is obviously not part of the group.

The 3 galaxies immediately to the right of IC 1370 could be part of the chain, or they could be in the distance. I don’t see signs of interaction, so it is not obvious to me that they are all part of the same chain.  Still, it would be quite a coincidence for this many galaxies to be so close together, so I am guess that a few of them belong to the same group.
