Description

With some time on my hands, I finally have an opportunity to process some long neglected data.

In this instance, I decided to use the "Live Composite" function on my Olympus OMD-EM5 MkII. In this mode, the camera takes a continuous series of images with the same exposure time, but only the initial image is used to record the ambient light. After that, only the brighter pixels of the subsequent images are used.

This has the advantage of ensuring no areas of the image overexpose.

As this image shows, the downside are that 1) the movement of the trees in a reasonably strong breeze was also captured, 2) there is a short processing time between exposures which leads to an "aliasing" effect of the star trail and 3) the individual exposures are not stored, so there is no opportunity to take an alternate processing approach.

Still, by managing the image scale, the artefacts are minimised and, after all, it's more about the experience and the memory.
