Description

This rarely imaged object is a galaxy group located 90 million light years away in the constellation of PIsces at a declination of +9 degrees.

The focal point of the image, and the anchor of the galaxy group, is the bright lenticular galaxy NGC 524 near the center. This galaxy has a magnitude of 10.2 and a surface brightness of 12.8. It spans over 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years. The Hubble view of this galaxy shows some interesting dust lanes and faint structure, which are only barely visible in my image.

Numerous other members of the galaxy group are annotated in the Astrobin mouseover. The galaxies lie in a unique triangular pattern. Some of them have interesting structure, as seen in the full resolution view.
