Description

Another image of Janssen crater – this time with Janssen centred in the field of view (a very old and degraded walled plain), and better illuminated as the moon is a day older in the waxing crescent phase. The diameter of this hexagonal crater is quoted as 189km and 201km, depending on how you measure the ‘diameter’ of a hexagon. The arcuate and bifurcating Janssen Rille which runs across the floor of Janssen crater is 140 km long. The 78 km wide Fabricius crater, with its 800m high linear mountain range that arises from its crater floor, lies entirely within the outer perimeter of the older eroded Janssen impact structure.

I really like this area, a lot going on, but as always with lunar imagery better viewed on an IPad.
