Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a spiral galaxy located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +3 degrees. This magnitude 13.2 galaxy, also known as NGC 3664, spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 45,000 light years. This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Low Surface Brightness.

This galaxy is really messed up. The barred white core is off center to the right side. The arms are distorted beyond recognition. Star formation is occurring in the outer disk, particularly in the lower right portion. Something has interacted with this galaxy to cause this sever disturbance.

The faint galaxy at the bottom of the image, UGC 6418, is about the same distance away as Arp 5 and could be the cause of the disturbance. This small magnitude 15 dwarf galaxy also has a messy disk structure.
