Description

This object is a bipolar protoplanetary nebula located 3000 light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +12 degrees.  It spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a length of 0.4 light years.

The life of a protoplanetary nebula is short by astronomical measures, usually lasting only about 1000 years.  It is the time between the end of the AGB (asymptotic giant branch) phase and the subsequent planetary nebula (PN) phase.   Protoplanetary nebula are typically imaged in broadband, not in narrowband, because they are reflection nebula, with little to no ionization occurring.   They emit strongly in the infrared because of their dust shells.

Studies have identified that dust within this nebula is abundantly coated in grains of water ice, unique for any such nebula.  This, and its location in the constellation Leo, is the reason behind the “Frosty Leo” nickname.

Although this object is tiny, the 2 bipolar lobes are easy to see.  The central bright section is believed to be a side-on view of a torus surrounding the 11 magnitude post-AGB star.
