Description

Roiling maelstrom of gas and dust clouds in the heart of the War and Peace nebula in Scorpius.

While the light from our sun takes around 8 minutes to reach us, this nebula is around 8000 light years distant.
The 2 brightest stars in this image are very much in the foreground, being only 248 and 330 light years distant, or only 4% of the distance from earth to the nebula in the background.

The nebula holds a vast tapestry of gas, dark dust and newly birthed stars wreathed in cocoons of gas and dust from which they nucleated and ignited their nuclear furnaces. Energetic radiation and interstellar winds of solar particles emitted by these hot young stars have sculpted intricate shapes into the nebula. Dusty pillars of molecular gas hide massive proto-stars that are embedded throughout the pillars.

The wonder of creation - of new stars and planetary systems - ongoing before our very eyes.

Imaged from Seacliff, Adelaide with narrowband filters over the course of 3 imaging sessions (28 June, 6 July, 7 July), and involving 9 hours of light capture via 1080 x 30 second sub-frames (Skywatcher 8 inch/f5 Newtonian.

SHO with Ha as Luminescence layer.
