Astrophotography is Recognized as Fine Art

Description

As some you know, for the last few years I have been exploring astrophotography as a fine art. As part of my effort I have been entering my work in large, international fine art photography competitions. Last year, 2019, there was a break through. I received two nominations and two Honorable Mention awards in the Nature category at the International Color Awards (https://www.colorawards.com). This year, 2020, the recognition of astrophotography as a fine art was even more profoundly established. The International Photography Awards (IPA, https://www.photoawards.com) added Astrophotography as part of the Nature category for the first time. I am happy to report that one of my images was awarded 1st Place and another received Honorable Mention. This is an important step in establishing astrophotography as a legitimate fine art. IPA is a large competition, this year with more than 13,000 entries from 120 countries and a jury of 100 judges from galleries, museums, and design houses worldwide.

While establishing astrophotography as a category in mainstream fine art competitions was a big step, there was also progress in more traditional fine art photography venues. Two of my images were Nominees in the 2020 Spider Award (https://www.thespiderawards.com), international black/white photography competition. One was nominated in the category Nature, and the other in the category Abstract. For me, the recognition in the Abstract category is notable. In some ways, the purest fine art photography is black/white in the category Abstract, and now an astrophotograph has been selected as worthy of recognition.

For those of you in the Fine Art Astrophotography group, and those that are interested in fine art photography, I encourage you to enter your work in traditional photography competitions. I believe that the time has come for astrophotography as a fine art.
