Description

This object is a face-on barred lenticular galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -27 degrees. This 11.6 magnitude galaxy spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 140,000 light years.

This galaxy has a beautiful, complex structure. The bright round core is surrounded by an oval bright area, which itself is part of a long bar with ansae at each end. The inner region is oval, yet the overall galaxy is circular at the extreme edges. The outer region is diffuse but some spiral star stream structure can be seen as well as some dim star clusters. The outer region has a blusih cast, contrastly nicely with the yellowish inner region.
