Description

As I have said before, I am at the point of my vdB catalog work that I am imaging the last parts of the catalog.  Many of these last parts are not what you would call showcase objects.  Not surprisingly, I believe that this is the first appearance on Astrobin of this object as the subject of an image but I could be wrong about that.

As seen in the mouseover, vdB 58 is located in the exact center of this image, in the constellation of Orion at a declination of -8 degrees.   This vdB object is small and surrounds the orange 10.2 mag star BD-08 1208.  vdB 58 is 1300 light years away and is 0.4 ly in diameter.

Dust fills the background intermittently and makes processing of this region difficult.

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude.  My Astrobin vdB Collection, which is about 80% complete, is here.
