Description

I was very fairly shocked at how much nebulosity and detail I was able to capture in this image, considering its low elevation at my latitude and that I was aiming through remnants of the Canadian wildfire smoke.

Zeta Ophiuchi (center of image) is a runaway star, originally part of a binary system in Scorpius. When its companion star exploded as a supernova, Zeta Ophiuchi was ejected from the system and is ionizing hydrogen gas as it zips through space at 24 kilometers per second (54,000 miles per hour), creating a massive, diffuse H-alpha region (Sh2-27). Also visible in this image are several Lynd's Dark Nebulae (LDNs), primarily on the eastern side of Sh2-27.
