Description

Image of the Tulip Nebula (Sh2-101) taken on the nights of October 21/22/29, =highlighted-text2022.  

Per Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh2-101):  Sharpless 101 (Sh2-101) is a H II regionemission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It is sometimes also called the Tulip Nebula because it appears to resemble the outline of a tulip when imaged photographically. It was catalogued by astronomer Stewart Sharpless in his 1959 catalog of nebulae. It lies at a distance of about 6,000 light-years (5.7×1016 km; 3.5×1016 mi) from Earth.

Imaged with a William Optics GT81 at F4.7 (382 mm focal length) using Flat6A II field flattener/0.8x reducer, Optolong L-Enhance dual narrowband filter, and modified Nikon =highlighted-textD5300 DSLR.  Total integration time of ~6 hours: 61 subs at ISO400 with an exposure time of 360 sec.

Processing:
  • All images pre-processed using Pixinsight's weighted batch pre-processing script (WBPP) to perform calibration, debayering, registration, local normalization, and integration.  Background removed using GradXpert. Initial post-processing in Pixinsight:  spectrophotometric color calibration, blur x terminator, and noise x terminator.
  • RGB stars image processing (UVIR cut filter data):  Masked stretch with background target set to 0.1.   Generated stars only version using StarXterminator.
  • Starless image processing (narrowband data): Generated starless version using StarXterminator.  Masked stretch (target background = 0.1), generalized hyperbolic stretch, curves adjustment, and ezHDR script.  Narrowband normalization process (Mode 2) used to generate HOO palette style image.Narrowband normalization process (Mode 1) used to generate SHO palette style image.
  • Final image generated by combining stars only and starless images using Pixelmath process
