Description

Abell 33 (aka A33 or PK238+34.1) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Hydra.

The star HD 83535 just happens to coincidentally (from our vantage point) be aligned with the nebula's rim, giving the appaerance of a "Diamond ring".  The fact that the nebula has a somewhat spherical form is mainly due to the absence of spin of the central star.  The central star is a double star, (Not resolved to full separation in this image), and as of 2014,  it was unknown as to whether they formed a physical pair or a chance alignment.

The nebula's faint magnitude (+12.9) makes this a somewhat challenging target but well worth the effort!
