Description

NGC 6188 is called the 'Rim Nebula' and the more colorful name, 'The Fighting Dragons of Ara'.  Although an emission nebula, the reflection nebulosity in the region extends from the young, bright open cluster NGC 6193 (Caldwell 82). Together the area is called the Ara OB1 Association, a region that includes dark nebula. O'Meara refers to this whole area of Ara as a 'swath of cosmic splendor' (2016:386).  In the lower right corner are NGC 6164 and NGC 6165, a bipolar ejected nebula formed by the star HD 148937;  extending the dragon theme, this small area is sometimes called the Dragon Egg.  The 'Fighting Dragons' are often-imaged in the Southern Hemisphere, and this was my first attempt at the region as it becomes lower in the southwest in October. The 80mm Esprit offers a nice FOV for the Dragons.
