Description

M97 as a planetary nebula about 2000 lightyears away from us in Ursa Major, spanning 1 lightyear in diameter and about 8000 years old.
A planetray nebula consists of the glowing ejected gases of a red giant star in their later life stage. A red giant is the last stage of a star before it collapses ino a white dwarf.

M97 consists of 3 outer shells that are being illuminated by its central star, which is 1/7th of our suns mass and turning into a white dwarf.
The particle and radiation pressure of the central star push out the gas shells into the interstellar medium.

The eye like structure for what ist called Owl Nebula is an affect of its innermost structure not being spherical like the 2 outer shells, but rather forming a barrel like structure that pierces through the outer shells.
