Description

Located in Hercules, NGC 6210 is a very small (only 15 x 20 arc sec) but bright (mag. 8.4) planetary nebula. In the late 16th century it was originally identified as a star but Wilhelm von Struve realized it's nebulous nature in 1825 while he was searching for double stars. It is about 6000 light years distant. Imaging it with a reflector can be somewhat problematic since the nebula itself is small and bright enough to create diffuse diffraction spikes. It is very strong in O3 which is where the detail came from in the image. A paper on it's elemental makeup can be found at the link below. Imaged over 9 nights between February 24th and April 8th 2024 from SkiesAway Observatory.  There was an element of lucky imaging involved since the frame reject rate was about 75% in order to get decent detail.
